Sydenham Housing Co-operative was started in 1980 with eight founding members that recognised a need within the Borough of Lewisham for alternative housing. We are proud that after 45 years , Sydenham Housing Co-op is still running and providing homes for the local diverse community, where the need for good quality affordable homes is bigger than ever.
We are family oriented, fully Mutual Housing Co-op where members are actively involved in the running of all aspects of the Housing Co-op. Members are involved in management, administration, planning and making important decisions on maintenance and improvement of all properties, following National Heath and Safety regulations and Government Policies. We employ Housing Manager and Maintenance Officer to help us run the Co-op smoothly.
Each Member pays £1 for a Share Certificate. Possession of a Share Certificate in turn enables Members to express views, vote on major changes and policies, take part in the Co-op, know where and how money is spent, make comments and choices (within what is practical) regarding the standard and design of their housing.
Historically, Housing Co-operatives were registered with the Registry of Friendly Societies and the Housing Corporation, from whom they received funding. Those funds were of significant importance as they helped numerous Co - ops including ours, renovate and convert properties to a good quality homes, with an aim to accommodate people in housing need who, on becoming members will participate in the smooth and successful growth and running of Sydenham Housing Co-operative.
